Corund, Snail Hill

The hill got its name from its snail shape. Travertine was born by sedimentation from water springs rich in limestone. In cracking cold carbonated water rich in calcium aragonite crystallizes the gas loss. Once upon a time, aragonite was extracted from here with hand tools, mining permanently destroying the snail shape of the hill.

As it is written on one of the information panels, on the 3 sites of the current reservation we can see the surface scars left behind by the extraction of aragonite. It is almost unbelievable, but aragonite is still being formed. Very slow, but it is forming.

Once there, we can witness this wonderful process. The age of the Hill with Snails is estimated at 30-40,000 years! If you do not hurry and walk with your eyes open, you will be able to see aragonite crystals in the wall.
