Bucuresti, Cotroceni Palace

In 1679 Șerban Cantacuzino, ruler of Wallachia (1678-1688), founded a monastery on the Cotroceni hill, and to the north he built the royal houses used by Constantin Brâncoveanu.

After several changes they became the summer residence of the ruler Barbu Dimitrie Sterbei, and later, in 1862, they were refurbished for Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The Cotroceni Palace, as we know it today, was built during Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

He transforms it into a residence for Prince Ferdinand and Princess Maria. The new palace was built after the projects of French architect Paul Gottreau. Though the works lasted only two years (1893-1895), the decorations spread over several decades.

The Communist period has put its fingerprints on the palace. After the departure of King Mihai in the country, a lot of valor was stolen, and in 1949 the building became the Palace of the Pioneers. The building was affected by the earthquake (1977), but restoration began immediately.

After 10 years of works, Ceausescu demolishes the old church of the monastery, and the palace becomes a guest house.

After the revolution in 1990, in a wing of the palace Cotroceni National Museum is set up, and on the other side of the assembly to install the presidency of Romania. Cotroceni Palace became the residence of presidents of Romania.
