1860 is the year of foundation Art museum, first in Romania. The basis of the museum spent 12 paintings from the collection Marismas. In 1845 Scarlat Varnow student at the Sorbonne attends an auction of paintings belonging to the Marquis Alexandre Marie Aquado of Las Marismas in Paris.

Vârnav acquires the collection of 16 paintings, which bear the signatures of great masters such as Rubens, Caravaggio, Pietro Liberi, Murillo, Eustache le Sueur, Philippe de Champaigne, Egbert van Heemskerk, of which 12 are entrusted by Vârnav National Museum inaugurated in 1860.

In less than a year, the collection was enriched with Costache Negri's collection of 39 paintings: Veronese, Van Dyck, Poussin, Tintoretto, Solimena and Jan Both. Over the years, the heritage of the Romanian Art Museum has been enriched with many donations, today hoarding approximately 10,000 works of art: painting, graphics and sculpture. The museum had several headquarters, and since 1957 it has been in the Palace of Culture. The exhibits are organized in three galleries: Modern Romanian Art, Contemporary Romanian Art, and European Art.
