Călimănești, Cozia monastery, Northern Chapel

The construction of the Northern Chapel, founded by the abbot Ioan of Hurezi, the counselor of the ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu, was finished in 1710. The chapel was built in the form of a ship, of which the narthex is separated by two columns with capitals.

Over a century and a half, in 1859, the raging of the Olt waters led to the collapse of the detritus located outside the wall of the city. The wall was severely damaged and the chapel was supported on it. Only two side walls remained.

Luckily the frescoes survived, but they stayed in the wind for more than a century. The chapel was restored only between 1959 and 1960, and since then we have undergone major changes.
