Brașov, The first Romanian School

The opening of the first Romanian school in 1495 was an outstanding event. Each village chose one child who came to learn here, in order to become a teacher, notary or priest. As an entrance fee the pupil had to bring a bucket of wheat, a wagon of wood, and 3-4 pengos, the equivalent of 3-4 calves. The school thought grammar, Byzantine dances, parables from the Bible, as well as XVI century philosophy, quotations by Aristotle and Democritus, filling in forms, breeding bees, doing business. They had law books and even a book on macrobiotics written by Pavel Vasici in 1844 discussing the secret to long life. Thanks to Deacon Coresi the first Romanian books were published here. His print as well as the famous coresian nine volumes are exhibited in the museum. Coresi, one of the fathers of Romanian language and culture came from Târgoviște in 1556, when the Orthodox church still used the Slav language, though in Transilvania they began to translate religious books. In order for the Orthodox Church to keep its believers in the midst of the multiplying new religions books in Romanian were needed. This is why Coresi came to Brasov. In his 39 books he translated all ceremonies and teachings of the church. He sent out 150-200 copies to each church. Today in addition to the requisites of the first school, Coresi's print and many other objects, the museum exhibits a number of silver plated books, documents from the time of Stefan cel Mare, a grant letter from 1656 and Tudor Ciortea's (musician) and Stefan Mironescu's (painter) memorial rooms.
