The Brukenthal castle,on the territory of the Sâmbata de Jos stud-farm, was built in 1750 by Count Jozef von Brukenthal, the brother of Samuil von Brukenthal. The castle is a solid building, its walls are 1.2 m thick, it has 35 rooms with wonderful stoves of glazed tile, the floor is of oak paneling, and people say that on one of the walls there was a beautiful fresco, but was whitewashed in the 70s. The building of the castle lasted for a long time. The about 1700 hectare area was taken on lease by Brukenthal for 99 years, from Maria Theresa of Austria. As a sign of his gratitude, he raised a castle, and planned to welcome Maria Theresa in it, but no one knows if the empress ever visited the castle. Local people tell stories about the passionate love between the two. Legends were born. Some say the empress never came to the Count, while others say she was spending many summers here, but quickly got tired of it. There is no evidence for anything of course, it was a long time ago, and many things might have happened…
