In 1211, Andrew II was brought here by the Teutonic Knights, with the right to build a fortress only from the ground and logs, to defend the Hungarian Crown territories. The right to build the stone was only two years before their expulsion. The documentary testimony comes from 1240 when the papers speak of Castrum Sanctuary Mariae which recalls the grace of Mary the Holy Defender of the Teutonic Knights. In 1241 the Tartars destroyed the fortress within which there was a chapel, a knight's house (dining room, storeroom, bedroom) and a bolnard. During the time of Bela IV (1206-1270) the Cistercians built the current church on the ruins of the fortification.

Along the defensive wall of oval shape there were four towers that over the years have been torn down. It seems that after 1420, in the time of Sigismund of Luxembourg the fortification was restored, but in 1430 the fortress was destroyed by the Turks and by Vlad the Impaler. After a new restoration, it was ruined after the Battle of Feldioara (1529). On the tower wall is seen the year 1657, but it is not known what it indicates. Between 2012 and 2017 the fortress was restored. The builders have strictly respected the architecture of the city. The walls with the defensive towers were restored, the Teutonic fortifications, the remains of a chapel and a Cistercian monastery were preserved, and the fountain was set up. The archaeological excavations preceding the restoration work revealed objects from the Neolithic, Geto-Dacian and Medieval periods. These are displayed in the museum arranged inside the fortress.
