Timișoara, The Serb Cathedral

The church was built in Baroque style in the period 1745-1748, in the time of the Serb Orthodox bishop from Timișoara, Gheorghe Popovici. The edifice was made of stone and brick. From political reasons the steeples of the church were raised only in 1791. The interior is adorned with a splendid altar screen. The wooden parts were realized by the Ianici brothers, while the painting is the work of the well-known Baroque painter, Constantin Daniel. The church has been restored several times, the last time in the period 1993-1997 when it was completely renovated. Its walls guard the tombs of 7 Serb Orthodox bishops and of several members of the Serb community.
