Satu Mare, Szekler gates

Satu Mare is a village of Szekler gates. In 1567 the town had 19 gates, in 1614, 47, which burned next to houses in the fire of 1851. After the first new gate appeared in 1861, the number of large carved and painted gates increased every year, reaching over 200 today.

Due to their antiquity and uniqueness, 11 are monuments. The oldest gate, that of the parish dates from 1858. The craftsmen used archaic elements and forms, a local feature being the green and blue used at the base, respectively at the top of the gates, to symbolize the earth and the sky.

In addition to the painted motifs, the gates also have inscriptions including the date of their realization. These wonderful Szekler gates, beautifully cared for by the villagers, attract many tourists every year. Starting with 1999, the Cultural Association for the Preservation of Satu Mare Tradition organizes every year the Szekler Gates Day where the lovers of folk traditions and crafts meet and participate in scientific and ethnographic conferences.
