Until the beginning of the 19th century the population of Tarna Mare was entirely Romanian. The first Hungarian families appeared in 1840. Reformed believers built in 1864 a parish house, where a prayer house also functioned, with the intention of building a church.

Lack of money and war have thwarted this plan. The only change that has occurred since then is the appearance of a support column in the middle of the prayer house. The bell tower was built in 1876. The bell tower in 1781 was purchased from the reformed church in Cégénydányád (Hungary) in 1864. The second bell bought from the reformed church in Tunyog (Hungary) was reclaimed in World War I .
