The archaeological remains certify the presence of people in the locality, since the 1st and 2nd centuries. It has been documented since 1329, over the centuries it appears as a free royal city. The interest was great for the exploitation of the deposits in the area. In the 18th-19th centuries it became a tourist resort. In 1562 the Turks attacked the town, in 1589 a fire destroyed the town in 1710 an outbreak kills 580 inhabitants in 1771 returning Turks in 1780 were floods in 1782 locusts destroyed crops. As of the time of Empress Maria Theresa, the population increased from 300-5000 people and remained constant until the middle of last century.
