Ocna Șugatag, a town located on the plateau between the rivers Mara and Crasna, dates from 1355. It was owned by the Drágfy family and at the end of the 15th century it became a royal domain. In 1355 the salt mine first appeared in 1777 engaging German and Slovak miners. In 1799 the Albert mine was opened in 1802 Mihaly mine, in 1803 the Nepomuki Szent János mine, 1809 Teréz mine, 1821 the Gábor mine, and in 1877 the Erzsébet-Anna-Julianna triple mine. In 1924 the town was devastated by a fire. In 1950 mines began to break down and the lakes appeared. Mine Gábor was first closed in 1950.
