Corund, Aragonite museum

In 1895 the Czech sculptor Knop Vencel from Zlatna arrived in Corund and saw a good business opportunity in the Aragonite in the salt water hills. He settled in Corund and managed to rent an area rich in aragonite for 20 years.

In 1914 he founded the first aragonite processing factory in Transylvania, the objects produced here reaching all over the world. After Knop's death in 1941, the business was continued by his wife until nationalization when the factory reached the Odorheiu Secuiesc cooperative.

In order to increase production in 1963, the mine was blown up and collapsed, leaving the factory without raw materials. Fortunately, since 1989 followers could recover factory building. Following the steps taken by Tófalvi József, Knop's grandchildren: Éva Sebő and Knop Vencel jr., As well as the Corund-Praid regional nature conservation trust, since the summer of 2012 in one part of the building operates the Aragonite Museum Knop Vencel.
