Sighetu Marmației, Monastery of Piarists

In 1730, the first representatives of the Piarists arrived in Sighetu Marmatiei. Their stay here was closely linked to education. In 1790 they started the first school with 28 boys. At first they had a wooden school.

In 1774 the construction of the monastery and the gymnasium began. In the storey monastery were the monks' rooms and other rooms. Upstairs were classrooms and professorial room and downstairs office. The school was built on the other side of the church.

The church and school were destroyed in the fires of 1802 and 1872, but were rebuilt by fire. The new two-story school was built between 1911-12. After the war, the order of the Piarists was banned. The History Museum currently operates in the building.
