The Banffy family was the only aristocratic family in Transylvania until the 18th century. Their current Art Museum in Cluj was built between 1774 and 1785. The edifice made by the Sibiu architect Johann Eberhard Blaumann has two levels and a beautifully decorated fašade.

Starting with 1956, the palace shelters the National Art Museum, founded in 1951, with a valuable heritage of painting, graphics and decorative art. In 1997 he was nominated for the EMYA for the European Museum.
