Sângeorgiu de Pădure, Rhedey castle

Famila Rhédey received his knighthood in 1466 from Matthias. The family's fortune was founded by the Oradea captain Rhédey Ferenc, who died in 1621. His son, Ferenc, born in 1610, came to the helm of Transylvania after the abdication of Prince Rákóczi György II.

With the death of his son László, this branch of the family became extinct in 1664. The Transylvanian branch of the family is carried on by Rédey Gábor until 1897. Since 1663 there is a Rédey mansion that is modified by successive generations. Rédey Gábor's initials are probably visible on one of the balconies. The castle was rebuilt between 1807 and 1809 by László Rédey. The most famous person born here was Countess Rhédey Claudia Zsuzsanna (1812-1841) who after the marriage became Countess of Hohenstein and great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II of England.

The 13 rooms of the castle are lined up around the U-shaped central hall and its staircase. Castle estate in 1885 and purchased by the landlord Rudolf Schuller. 1935 is the official headquarters offices, and since 1948 works as a school.

The building, renovated in 2011, is home to cultural and tourist activities. From the French park of the castle there is still a small garden, the rest was built or used as agricultural land.
