Retezat Mountains are located in the western of the South Carpathians, being known by varied flora and myriad lakes.

The Custura tails lie in the basin of the Custura Peak (2457m). There are two nearby lakes, named after their size. The Mare Lake of Custura is at an altitude of 2226 m, it has an area of 2.78 ha and a depth of 9 m. The Mic lake of Custura is at an altitude of 2210 m, it has an area of 0.77 ha and has a depth of 7.3 m. The waters of Lake Mare reach Lake Mic, and its brook gathers even more streams forming the Ciumfu Mare Waterfall, after which it becomes the main source of the Barbat River.
