Retezat Mountains are located in the western of the South Carpathians, being known by varied flora and myriad lakes.

Ciumfu lakes

Ciumfu Mare Lake, located at an altitude of 2040 m, is in a bazin under the Custura peak (2457m) fed by the Custurii stream, which gathers the waters of Custura Mare and Custura Mică lakes.

The creek of the Ciumfu Mare lake after a surface trail is thrown from a threshold of over 100 m, giving rise to the beautiful Ciumfu waterfall. Lake Ciumfu Mic is located in the neighboring basin, below the Ciumfu Mare Peak (2257m) at an altitude of 1910m. Its waters reach the Bărbat river, but downstream of the Ciumfu waterfall and the stâna de Râu. These lakes are visited on the shepherd trails by those who reach the Stana de Râu.
