In 1557 was founded the Schola Particula reformed school. After the Rákóczi fight for freedom the teachers and pupils from Alba-Iulia and Sárospatak were expelled as they were accused with kuruc-advocacy from their houses and they took refuge in Targu Mures. On 30.th of April 1718 the reformed collage opened its doors what had tertiary education as well. Beside theology and philosophy in 1797 joint the law, philology and natural science as well. The main building was built at the beginning of the previous century after the plans of an architect from Budapest named Baumgarten Sándor. After the first W.W. it became religious school and during the second W.W. army hospital. Many of the teachers were sent to the front line, the education took place behind the walls of the catholic gymnasium. After the war the school was restorated by the teachers, pupils and their parents and reopend at 20th of November 1944. The school got in 1957 the name of its former teacher Bolyai Farkasnak, the father of the great mathematician Bolyai János.
