Owing to count Teleki Sámuelnek (1739-1822) in 1802 opened its doors the first public library of the country in Targu Mures. The building was built after the plans of the Vienesse architect Ignatz Schlaff between 1799-1808.

The library hall is two stage high. Count Telki Sámuel per his relations bought his books from 25 countries of Europe. In 60 years he collected all the scientific books that had appeared since the letter-press. In majority he bought scientific books but he also collected rarity of books. The material of the library emerged from the association of two collector.

Teleki took 40.000 books as well as Bolyai 80.000 volumes to the library. This was joint by 90.000 volumes of the ancient reformed collage, the manuscript and the personal objects of the genial mathematicians Farkas and János Bolyai as well as the volumes of the Benedictine library from Calugareni. The Teleki-Bolyai library still keeps the ancient furniture and also the ancient arrangement of the books. The thematic catalog of the more than 200.000 volumes was typed in Vienna between 1796-1819 in 4 volumes.

Today the Telki-Bolyai library owes one of the biggest antique book collection of Transylvania.
