The acting roots in Targu Mures goes back to the XVII.th century. In spring of 1946 under the leading of Tompa Miklos director-producer opened its doors the Székely Theatre. The performances took place in the Cifra Palace.

In 1962 when the Romanian ensemble joins too they get the name of Statal Theatre. The new building of the theatre was inaugurated in 1973. Its main hall has 599 seats as well as the studio-theatre was planed for 100 persons. Annually they play 9 Hungarian and 9 Romanian plays. The companies took part of several international guest-plays as well and the building gave place to several reputed that theatrical festival as well. From 1978 it has became National Theatre.
